Butterfly's v Weybridge Emeralds
By Patricia Balcombe
What a roller-coaster
The girls started well in this match and took an early lead of 6 - 4 after some great passing and lovely goals from distance due to the pressure from the Weybridge defense.
With 4 shooters playing today we had a complete switch up in the attacking circle but kept all the other positions the same. A lot of silly errors in this quarter from both sides resulted in a very low score for the 10 minutes but the Butterfly's managed to extend their lead by one goal to go into half-time 10 - 7.
A change in the attack end for this 3rd quarter with the original shooters coming back on and a different WA. Unfortunately the combinations did not work as well as the first quarter and we were called for either footwork, replayed ball or held ball numerous times causing lots of turnovers and allowing Weybridge to take the lead for the first time in the game with the 3rd quarter ending 12 -11 to Weybridge.
The last 10 minutes saw a change in GS & WA and all the girls on court and supporting, knew they had to fight for as much possession as possible. The defense managed to put extra pressure in Weybridge's shooting circle forcing them to take shots from distance and collecting the rebounds. Mid court up'ed their game to make brilliantly timed movements to receive the ball in front and successfully deliver it to our shooters. The shooters held their nerve to take shots from distance, if need be, and then follow to get the rebound and successfully pop the goal in from under the post.
It was a very nerve wrecking 10 minutes where all players didn't stop putting the pressure on to force the oppositions errors and then safely keep possession to draw level with 2 minutes remaining. In the final minutes the girls determination shown through to take a 3 goal lead with quick accurate passing while everyone nervously watched on from the sidelines. Weybridge scored just as the final whistle was blown but it was too late to undo the girls hard work in the final quarter resulting in a win to the Butterfly's by 2 goals.
A great team effort from all 9 girls who really fought hard in this match to turn it around and secure their 5th win in this league.
