Butterfly's v Windsor Wildfires
By Patricia Balcombe
A Game of two halves!!
Tonight's match was always going to be a tough one as the Butterfly's faced the division leader who had only lost one match so far this season.
Once again we started slow, seems to be a recurring theme in the Charters league, and before we knew it the first 10 minutes had gone by and Windsor were comfortably ahead by 5 goals with the score being 7 - 2 at the end of the first quarter.
The 2nd quarter saw us lose a bit of momentum and struggle with spacing on court and passes, allowing Windsor to pull even further away to take a 14-3 lead at half-time.
After a quick talk at half-time and reminding the girls what they can do the Butterfly's seemed to enjoy the 2nd half of this match as they really came alive and put pressure over all the oppositions passes and fight for every ball. They were given the target of 5 turnovers for the 2nd half and they all rose to the occasion. There was some great defending by everyone causing Windsor to make silly mistakes and some quick passing to deliver the ball safely to our shooters resulting in some great goals. End of the 3rd quarter saw the Butterfly's win that 10 minutes of play 9 - 4 to bring the score 18 - 12 to Windsor going into the final quarter.
Unfortunately in the final quarter the Butterflys struggled again with movement and also a bit of tiredness after the explosion in the 3rd quarter. They all still gave 100% but Windsor came back fighting and they had more turnovers then us resulting in the final quarter being a win for Windsor.
A great effort by all 8 players and the 3rd quarter really showed what you can do, we just need to be consistent for the whole match and all players to remember their jobs & roles to work as a team. At the half-way stage of this league we are in 4th place out of 10 teams and only 1 point behind the 3rd place team at the moment.
Have a great Christmas break and then ready to start the matches next term with determination from the first whistle and carry it through the whole match.
Player of match (voted by opposition): Eleanor Widdows
