Butterfly's v Bracknell Blaze
By Patricia Balcombe
Determination always shown
With 8 girls selected we tried a few different combinations during this match and all the players work hard no matter which bib they wore.
The first quarter saw our usual centre (Antonella) start as GD and one of our shooters (Evie) start as C. As we settled into the match everyone worked well on defending the passes but we forgot to move onto the ball a few times and the opposition took advantage of this by coming in front and intercepting the ball, denying us from delivering the ball to our shooters as much as we would of liked to. The score at the end of the first quarter saw Bracknell Flames take the lead by 9 goals at 13 - 4.
A few changes for the 2nd quarter, with Josie going into GD, Lana into WD, Evie into WA and Antonella into C, saw a much closer quarter and the girls were able to slow down the opposition with the score for the 2nd quarter only being 7 - 3 to Bracknell Flames. There was lots of turnovers from both teams during this quarter and everyone worked hard to try and gain possession and deliver the ball to our shooters.
At half-time another change made with Emilia returning at WA and Evie going into GA. This quarter was very quick with both teams moving onto the ball and finding the space to receive and deliver the ball to their respective shooters. The girls were given a target of improving in the 2nd half of the game and in one quarter managed to score more goals then in the first half. The score for this quarter was 15 - 8 to the opposition but was a great confidence boast for the Butterfly's as they worked well as a team and saw the goals add up.
The final quarter was very similar to the 1st & 2nd quarter in score lines but determination & effort was fantastic. Isla & Eleanor worked well together in shooting to score when given the opportunity, Josie & Lucy kept the pressure on the opposition in defense and got some fantastic interceptions & rebounds, Antonella, Lana & Emilia worked non-stop to try and generate the space on the attack and pressure when on the defense. The score for this quarter was 11 - 4 to Bracknell but the Butterfly's had achieved their target of doing better in the 2nd half and nearly doubled the number of goals scored resulting in a final score of 46 - 19 to Bracknell Flames.
This match was the smallest goal difference for the hardworking Butterflys and shows an improvement as the season goes on. Well done to the 8 players who worked non-stop and never let the scoreline effect the way they played. You have definitely earned the brownies at training on Wednesday.
Player of match (voted by opposition): Evie Faulkner
Thank you to Isla Milne for umpiring & Eleanor Widdows for scoring the 11am match.
